The ruins of the Roman fortification

The Roman fortification in which were found coins from the time of Constantine the Great was declared an archaeological reservation.

Monument dedicated to the heroes

The monument of the heroes who died on duty in the two world wars was made in 1995 of marble having a cross and bearing the names of the heroes from the locality who gave their lives to defend the homeland.

Close to Băltenii de Sus, approximately 2 km away, is an important historical objective, the archaeological site Piatra lui Sava Getic Fortress. The fortress as well as the archaeological vestiges scattered throughout the entire territory of the commune attest a long and intense population of these lands since the fourth century BC until the early feudal period. The fortress represents a proof of the existence of the settlement in this area since ancient times.

The site has the status of archaeological reservation. Salsovia fortress dates from the Roman-Byzantine era, being a civil and military settlement, destroyed in the fourth century by the Goths and rebuilt by the Byzantines. The fortress continued to exist until the ninth century.

 

The reservation is characterized by the presence of soils with calcareous and siliceous substrate, which led to the increase of the number of species that are found here, being here also 11 species of endangered animals. The reservation is located on the administrative territory of the communes Mahmudia and Beştepe on a surface of 15 hectares. In terms of fauna, in the reservation should be noted in particular the presence of the species the western marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus), the short-toed snake-eagle (Circaetus gallicus) and the sparrow hawk (Accipiter nisus).

Beştepe Hills, the most imposing from the landscape, with the five rounded peaks, descends in altitude on the direction W-E, from 243 m up to 171 m. These hills are lined up on about 5 km in length, the peaks are separated by grassed valleys, as deeper as much as the blanket of loess is thicker and the slope is greater.

The dedication day of the Church St. Demetrius from Beștepe commune is celebrated every year on October 26, becoming in time also the day of this locality, moment of great joy when the children of the village meet together.

  • The Orthodox Church in Beştepe is distinguished by its large size, being situated on a hill from where it dominates the view in a silent and serene way.
  • The Orthodox Church Băltenii de Sus is the first church dedicated to St. John the Baptist from the Delta. The church has the shape of a ship with a single tower, without exterior ornaments. The settlement is a quiet place, an oasis of holiness and a refuge for the believer who is in search of the peace of mind.
